    The ABCs of Fly Control

Fly control like any other well-prepared and successful insect or rodent control program will yield the highest results with a multifaceted approach. For a program to work, all variables should be accounted for and if possible, included in the program. A well-designed program will be as closely tied to sanitation, biology, and behavior as it is to chemical control measures, consistency of service and placement. Like any living organism flies require the basic necessities of life; food, water, and shelter (breeding sites). In the case of flies these needs are often found in one source. By removing or limiting access to these basic needs the life cycle can be interrupted.

    Where to Begin

When first approaching an account with a Filth Fly problem, a detailed inspection will be necessary. An inspection not only includes the interior of the building, but the exterior and immediate area surrounding the building. The following questions should be asked and answered before any control measures are implemented.

    1) Since different flies require different control measures, what kind of fly is causing the problem? (Fruit Flies, Drain Flies or Filth Flies)

    2) Where is the client seeing the most activity? (the problem area)

    3) Where is the problem coming from? (the source)

    4) Why are the flies attracted to this location? (what are the attractants?)

    5) How does the client store food? (client practices)

    6) How does the client handle trash?

    7) Does the building have cracks or openings around doors and windows?

    Possible Problem Areas Fly Attractions

During the inspection, look for any trash or debris buildup.

Greasy, drippy trails leading from the back door to the dumpster may contain enough rotting organic matter to attract flies. Once flies are in the area, an open door or missing screen will invite pests into the building.

Is there a large amount of trash buildup around the dumpsters?

Do the dumpsters not empty completely leaving buildup at the bottoms? Are employees throwing unsealed bags into the dumpster, creating leakage problems?

Could there be possible sewer backup problems? In fast food restaurants drive thru windows are often left open while food is prepared, allowing flies easy entry.

Blow Flies, Greenbottle, Bluebottle and Flesh Flies are attracted to meat. Be sure to rule out dead rodents as a food source if these are present.

House Flies and Little House Flies prefer manure for breeding sites, but will also use rotting vegetable matter, and other household garbage.
